Preparing for Your Jet Ski Dolphin Tour
You've booked your jet ski dolphin tour on the Indian River Lagoon — exciting! Now the question everyone asks: "What should I wear?" After running thousands of tours from Hutchinson Island, our captains have seen it all. Here's the definitive guide to dressing for success on the water.
What to Wear
Swimwear + Quick-Dry Layer
The ideal outfit is a swimsuit with a quick-dry rashguard or athletic shirt on top. You will get splashed — that's part of the fun. Cotton t-shirts get heavy and uncomfortable when wet, so stick with synthetic, quick-dry fabrics.
Women: Bikini or one-piece with a rashguard. A secure swimsuit is important — you'll be bouncing on waves.
Men: Board shorts and a rashguard or dry-fit shirt. Avoid loose basketball shorts that can ride up.
Footwear
Wear: Water shoes, Crocs with the strap on, or secure sandals with a heel strap (like Chacos or Tevas).
Don't wear: Flip-flops (they'll fly off), bare feet (the jet ski footwells can get hot), or sneakers (they'll get soaked and take forever to dry).
Sun Protection — Non-Negotiable
The Florida sun on the water is intense. The Indian River Lagoon's reflective surface essentially doubles your UV exposure. Here's what you need:
- Reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 50+) — Apply 30 minutes before your tour and bring it to reapply. Please use reef-safe formulas to protect the lagoon ecosystem.
- Sunglasses with a strap — Croakies or a similar retainer strap. Polarized lenses are best for seeing into the water (and spotting dolphins!).
- Hat with a chin strap — A baseball cap will blow off at speed. If you wear a hat, it needs a secure strap. Many guests skip the hat and rely on sunscreen.
- UV-protective clothing — A long-sleeve rashguard provides the best sun protection and eliminates the need to constantly reapply sunscreen on your arms.
What to Bring
Essential Items
- Waterproof phone case — This is the #1 item our captains recommend. A waterproof pouch (like a Joto or CaliCase) lets you take photos and videos without risking your phone. You'll want photos of the dolphins!
- GoPro or action camera — If you have one, bring it. The water-level perspective from a jet ski creates incredible dolphin footage.
- Towel — Leave it in your car for after the tour.
- Water bottle — Stay hydrated, especially in summer.
- Change of clothes — For after the tour if you have plans afterward.
Nice to Have
- Waterproof bag — A small dry bag for your car keys, wallet, and phone (if you don't have a waterproof case).
- Motion sickness medication — If you're prone to motion sickness, take Dramamine 30 minutes before. However, jet skis rarely cause seasickness since you're actively riding, not passively sitting.
- Snacks — A granola bar or trail mix for after the tour.
What NOT to Bring
- Expensive jewelry — Leave rings, necklaces, and watches in the car. The lagoon has claimed many a wedding ring.
- Loose items — Anything that's not secured will end up in the Indian River Lagoon.
- Heavy cameras with straps — A DSLR around your neck on a jet ski is a recipe for disaster. Use a GoPro or your phone in a waterproof case.
- Valuables you can't get wet — Assume everything on your person will get splashed.
Weather Considerations
Summer (June–August)
- Lightest clothing possible — it's hot and humid
- Extra sunscreen — reapply frequently
- Bring water — dehydration is real
- Morning tours are cooler and calmer
Winter (December–February)
- Wetsuit or long-sleeve rashguard recommended
- Water temps can drop to 65°F — still comfortable but cooler
- Light windbreaker for the ride back
- Afternoon tours are warmer
Rainy Days
- Light rain doesn't cancel tours — you're getting wet anyway!
- We provide life jackets that add a layer of warmth
- Thunderstorms with lightning will cancel tours (safety first)
Arrival Tips
- Arrive 15 minutes early for your safety briefing and jet ski instruction
- Apply sunscreen before you arrive — it needs time to absorb
- Use the restroom — tours are 1.5–2 hours on the water
- Eat something light — don't tour on an empty stomach, but don't eat a huge meal either
